Brian McCarthy, PMHNP
Life rarely progresses in straight lines. Brian’s certainly has not. He has worked in health care since the 1980s. He took a prolonged detour from that path and became a Franciscan friar for many years after falling in love with St. Francis of Assisi. Friar life took him many places including Bolivia, Taiwan and even the South Bronx. Eventually, he moved on and left religious life and started a family. He remains deeply influenced by the compassionate vision of Francis and it informs everything he does. It especially drove him to pursue advanced training in psychiatry!
Brian holds graduate degrees from Drexel and Rush Universities and is a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. He works with most ages and with most diagnoses. Complex bipolar disorders are of particular interest to him.
Brian’s Franciscan spirit pushes him to promote a compassionate and inclusive space for people to heal and to grow. He tries to individualize care for each patient and does not rely solely on prescription medication. He finds a holistic approach is better. Natural products as well as lifestyle modifications play a large role in what he does. He has extensive experience in diverse and multicultural environments as he has lived and worked in Bolivia, Taiwan and with Native Americans in the United States. He speaks several languages and regularly provides care in Spanish.
Apart from working, he has numerous interests that include exercise, playing the guitar and violin as well as spoiling his aging German Shepherd. Brian looks forward to welcoming you and helping you meet your goals!
